The Tragedy of Douglass, was performed last night for the
second time to a numerous and splendid audience, and on
Thursday next will be the West-Indian, with new
entertainments, which will be more fully expressed in the
next Monday's paper. We have been favoured by the managers
with a copy of the introductory Prologue, written by a
distinguished character, who, in the midst of superior
avocations, does not appear unmindful of the mute by whom he
is so much favour'd.
Prologue at the opening of the Theatre Royal, in New-York,
January 6, 1778.
Now that hoar winter o'er the frozen plain,
Has spread the horrors of his dreary reign,
Has bade awhile the din of battle cease,
And mocks these regions with the mask of peace:
Once more the scenic muse exerts her power,
And claims her portion of the leisure hour.
